Multiple investigators from the Department of Surgery and the iNSPIRe initiative collaborated in the paper “Timing of a Major Operative Intervention After a Positive COVID-19 Test Affects Postoperative Mortality” that was published in the September 2022 issue of the high-impact journal Annals of Surgery. In this nationwide analysis, lead authors Panos Kougias, MD MSc and Sherene Sharath, PhD, MPH demonstrated that postoperative mortality after major operative interventions performed within 8 weeks of a COVID diagnosis is significantly higher than mortality after identical procedures in COVID negative controls. The risk of mortality was particularly high among patients undergoing surgery within two weeks from a COVID-19 diagnosis.
