Visiting Professor, Dr. Herbert Chen, Discusses Success in Academic Surgery

The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery was honored to host renownedsurgeon, Dr. Herbert Chen, Chair of the Department of Surgery at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and Surgeon-in-Chief of the UAB Hospital and Health System, as visiting professor during Grand Rounds. Dr. Chen’s shared his expertise in academic surgery, delivering a highly anticipated conference that provided invaluable insights for trainees regarding success in the field of academic surgery. His engaging presentation and wealth of knowledge was an inspiration to our surgeons and residents alike.

Dr. Herbert Chen obtained his BS from Stanford University with Honors and with Distinction in 1988 and graduated from Duke University School of Medicine Alpha Omega Alpha in 1992. Dr. Chen then completed a general surgery residency followed by a surgical oncology and endocrinology fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. A small portion of Dr. Chen's extensive accomplishments include Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Surgery, President of the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons Foundation, President of Surgical Biology Club II, Past-President of Association for Academic Surgery, Past-President of the Society of Clinical Surgery, and Past-President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons,
