We've been at the forefront of biomedical research since 1956, when we launched our graduate programs. A Downstate faculty member, Dr. Robert Furchgott, won a Nobel Prize for his work with nitric oxide. His research revolutionized the way we treat strokes, heart attacks, impotence and more. Other Downstate researchers developed the first heart-lung machine, and helped invent the MRI.
