Dr. Jodi-Ann Edwards's Research Study Published in JAMA Surgery
Nov 1, 2024
The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery is thrilled to announce that the research
manuscript "Association between Facility Medicaid Burden and Necrotizing Soft Tissue
Infection-Related Mortality," authored by surgery resident and former iNSPIRe research
fellow, Jodi-Ann Edwards MD, PGY4, Professor and Chair of Surgery, Panos Kougias, MD, MSc, FACS, and Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical and Health Services Research, Sherene Sharath, PhD, MPH, has been accepted for publication in JAMA Surgery.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy as JAMA Surgery is currently the highest
ranking surgery journal in the world with an impact factor of 15.7 and a 13% acceptance
rate for all submissions.
Their research delved into the relationship between hospital resource constraints,
as indicated by high facility-level Medicaid burden, and adverse outcomes for patients
with necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTI). The findings underscore the importance
of addressing healthcare equity on the patient- and facility-level to decrease NSTI
mortality.
Furthermore, Dr. Edwards is committed to pursuing a career as an academic surgeon
leader specializing in Breast Surgery Oncology. Her dedication to serving marginalized
communities and conducting healthcare equity research will undoubtedly lead to significant
advancements in addressing healthcare disparities and improving patient outcomes.
We are incredibly proud of Dr. Edwards, Dr. Sharath, and Dr. Kougias for their outstanding
contributions to the field of surgery and healthcare equity research. This study may
help guide future research and efforts aimed at addressing and alleviating the impact
of hospital resource constraints on patient care.
