The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery washonored to host a Grand Rounds session with Kamal Itani, MD, who is Chief of Surgeryat the VA Boston Healthcare System, Professor of Surgery at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, and faculty at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Itani is a world-renowned surgeon-scientist. His Grand Rounds presentation, “Designing a Career Trajectory | Identifying a Challenge and Moving to Prominence,” focused on his involvement in numerous clinical trials and sound advice paving a similar path of excellence, fearlessly. Dr. Itani is member of the editorial board of JAMA Surgery and Surgical Infections. His behind-the-scenes perspectives on writing and communicating with meaning were invaluable.

Dr. Itani's talk was truly inspiring, leaving many residents feeling motivated and uplifted. We were deeply moved by his accounts and took away a powerful message of leadership, determination, and resilience. At the breakfast with residents and some faculty, Dr. Itani emphasized the importance of balancing family, friends, and wellness throughout our careers. We are thankful to Dr. Itani for generously sharing his knowledge and expertise with our Department of Surgery at SUNY Downstate.
