iNSPIRe Research Medical Student Awarded STRIDES Scholarship
Jun 27, 2024
Steven Medvedovsky, a third-year medical student at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine working as part of the Department of Surgery’s iNSPIRe Initiative, has been awarded a prestigious research scholarship from the SUNY Downstate Student Research Internship in Disparities and Equity Studies (STRIDES) program.
The STRIDES program is a competitive internship that provides project funding and mentorship to students committed to addressing health disparities and promoting equity through research. Steven's research focuses on addressing health disparities and promoting equity, with a particular interest in cardiovascular and health disparities research. Steven plans to apply for a general surgery residency next year.
Under the mentorship of Sherene Sharath, PhD, MPH, and Panos Kougias, MD, MSc, Steven has identified an important disparity in the surgical care of Chronic Limb Threatening Ischemia (CLTI). Their abstract, titled 'Incidence of Non-Elective Admission for Chronic Limb Threatening Ischemia by Facility Medicaid Payer Burden', won first place for Best Student Presentation at the Association of VA Surgeons (AVAS) 2024 Annual Meeting in Miami Beach, FL. This recognition reflects Steven's exceptional dedication and research excellence.
We're excited to see the impact he will make after his STRIDE internship, and we congratulate him on this well-deserved achievement.
