Resident's Breast Cancer Abstracts Accepted to National Conferences

By iNSPIRe Initiative | Feb 13, 2024

Dr. Cristina Solis-PomalesDr. Cristina Solis-Pomales, Department of Surgery research fellow and resident, is interested in studying genomics and disparities in breast cancer treatment. Under the mentorship of Dr. Jose Alberty-Oller, faculty at Kings County Hospital and director of the Breast Cancer Center, Dr. Solis has been carrying out several clinical research projects on the topic of equitable breast cancer treatment.

Dr. Solis's abstract was accepted for presentation at the Society of Surgical Oncology conference in Atlanta in March. Her study focused on how genomic testing is a valuable tool in predicting which breast cancer patients benefit from neoadjuvant chemotherapy and which patients will be able to achieve a response to chemotherapy.

Another of Dr. Solis's abstract's was accepted for presentation at the American Society of Breast Surgeon’s annual meeting in Orlando.  This study focused on the discordance between Blueprint, a molecular subtyping genomic test, and breast tumor immunohistochemistry. Her findings show how the reclassification of patients based on this genomic test can meaningfully influence breast cancer treatment.

Dr. Solis hopes her projects will highlight the importance of providing comprehensive care to breast cancer patients and pave the way to widespread use of genomic testing for underrepresented minorities. She continues working on studies and their associated publications in the hopes of impacting clinical care for patients who need it the most.
