Resident Academic Productivity in Plastic Surgery Research

By Department of Surgery | Mar 28, 2023

O.O.Dr. Olachi Oleru, general surgery resident at Downstate Health Sciences University, has been undertaking dedicated research time over the past year. Under the mentorship of Peter J. Taub, MD, FACS, FAAP at Icahn School of Medicine in Mount Sinai, she has been very productive in publishing her work on several subjects in plastic surgery.

In her most recent publication titled "A Nationally Validated Novel Risk Assessment Calculator for Prediction of Unplanned Reoperations and Readmissions in Hand Surgery" in Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery, she used large databases and machine learning to create a risk score (similar to the frailty index or Charlson comorbidity index) to predict risks in hand and upper extremity surgery. Her team found that the suggested novel score was more predictive than traditionally used indices. In future studies, her team will investigate validating these methods both retrospectively and prospectively. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Oleru on her remarkable scholarly productivity.
