National Clinical Trial Funding Notice

By Department of Surgery | Mar 27, 2023

The Downstate Department of Surgery is excited to announce funding notice from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the Improve-AD. This is a multi-center, multi-million dollar randomized controlled trial examining the treatment efficacy of thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) as compared to medical management for patients with uncomplicated Type B aortic dissections. The primary outcomes of the trial were defined as the mortality incidence and aortic-related hospitalizations during a 5-year study period.

Funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the trial will recruit close to a thousand patients across 60 sites in North America and is expected to direct decision-making guidelines on the treatment of this life-threatening disease. The multi-institutional collaborative undertaking is led by a group of experienced trialists that includes Panos Kougias, MD, MSc, Chair of the Downstate Department of Surgery, Firas Mussa, MD, MS, Professor of Vascular Surgery at the UT Houston McGovern Medical School and Manesh Patel, MD, Chief of Cardiology at the Duke University School of Medicine.
