Resident Awarded Best Basic Science Research Award at 2023 Society of Surgical Oncology

By Department of Surgery | May 8, 2023

Yi Song, MDYi Song, MD is a dedicated research resident in the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Division of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Her research fellowship commenced in 2021 following completion of her PGY3 year at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. At MSKCC, Dr. Song was privileged to work under the expert guidance of Dr. William R. Jarnagin and Dr. Michael I. D'Angelica. She was invited to present her work at conferences such as the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Americas HPB Association (AHPBA), and the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO).

Dr. Song's recent research on the genetic profiling of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma has been recognized as a significant contribution to the field of surgical oncology. The intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is known to be highly heterogeneous compared to other types of biliary tumors such as extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma or gallbladder cancer. Dr. Song collaborated with other researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and used a machine-learning-based statistical algorithm to discover better ways to classify intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma based on its genetic profile. Her findings have helped other clinicians and researchers to understand the biology and clinical behavior of this complex tumor better.

Dr. Song delivered her results recently at the plenary session of the 2023 International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care, organized by the SSO. The SSO recognized her work as the Best Basic Science Research Paper Award and the Top-Rated Oral Abstract Award in the HPB track. The Best Basic Science Research Paper Award is a highly esteemed recognition given to one recipient per year among all researchers who submit their work to SSO during surgery residency or CGSO/breast/cardiothoracic fellowship. The Department of Surgery congratulates her on the opportunity to present her research to a distinguished audience of surgeon scientists and surgical oncologists.
