By Department of Surgery | Dec 26, 2023

Dr. Patricia Turner

The Department of Surgery was honored to host Patricia Turner, MD, MBA, FACS as a noted Grand Rounds speaker. As CEO of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Dr. Turner highlighted the mission of ACS to improve surgical quality and patient care nationwide by expanding ACS Quality programs to more hospitals and resources to more clinicians, researchers, and patients.  She also reminded the audience that resident membership is free and encouraged trainees to participate in ACS early because of the many opportunities for leadership and networking through the ACS Resident and Associate Society (RAS). Dr. Turner acknowledged the contributions of the late Dr. Erfan Faridmoayer who invited and coordinated her visit to SUNY Downstate before his passing.

Following Grand Rounds, Dr. Turner had breakfast with faculty, senior residents, and research fellows, sharing invaluable knowledge and advice.

Dr. Turner attended the University of Pennsylvania as an undergraduate and then Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She completed her general surgery residency at Howard University. Dr. Turner achieved her minimally invasive and laparoscopic training in New York City at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Weill-Cornell School of Medicine, and Columbia University School of Medicine.

Dr. Turner initially joined ACS over 11 years ago and served as Director of Member Services. On January 1, 2022, Dr. Turner was elected as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) because she has exemplified excellence as a surgeon, leader, educator, innovator, and educator. With Dr. Turner's leadership, ACS membership has increased significantly, and several new programs have been implemented to improve the delivery of the highest quality surgical care.

The Department of Surgery at SUNY Downstate is truly appreciative of Dr. Turner's invaluable expertise and knowledge. It was a great learning opportunity for our team and we are grateful for her generosity in sharing them with us.
