Dr. Joseph Mills to Give the Departmental Grand Rounds

We are honored to announce Joseph L. Mills, MD, FACS as our next departmental grand rounds speaker on February 2nd, 2023. Dr. Mills is the John W. “Jack” Reid, M.D., ’43 and Josephine L. Reid Endowed Professor of Surgery and Division Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). He is also the Program Director for BCM’s integrated vascular surgery residency, as well as the Medical Director for the Diabetic Foot and Wound Care Center at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center.

Dr. Mills earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his surgical internship and residency at Wilford Hall U.S. Air Force Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He went on to train in Vascular Surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, and completed a senior fellowship in Endovascular Surgery at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Prior to his arrival at BCM, Dr. Mills served as chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson for over 20 years, where he co-directed the Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA). Among his great many honors, he has served as president of the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society, president of the Western Vascular Society, president of the Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery, director of the American Board of Surgery (ABS), immediate past chair of the Vascular Surgery Board of the ABS, and is a current member of the Surgery Residency Review Committee of the ACGME. He was recently elected as the President of the Society of Vascular Surgeons.

Dr. Mills is a world-renowned vascular surgeon that has authored nearly 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, focused on his clinical and research interests in noninvasive diagnosis, vein graft stenosis, intimal hyperplasia, and limb-salvage in patients with diabetes mellitus. He is the co-editor of two major vascular textbooks, Rutherford's Vascular Surgery and Comprehensive Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and is the Vascular Surgery Section Editor for UpToDate. He has been the principal investigator for over 40 clinical trials, including several current investigations.

The department of surgery at Downstate is eagerly excited for the arrival of Dr. Mills and looks forward to hearing his presentation to an audience of our students, trainees, and faculty.
