Resident Presents at Schwartz Conference

By Department of Surgery | Jul 21, 2023

Edwards, MDSUNY Downstate will be represented at the 2023 Schwartz Center for Compassion in Action Healthcare Conference by Drs. Jodi-Ann Edwards, Teresa Y. Smith, Elka Jacobson-Dickman, Melanie Cheng, and Lana Irons. Built on the Healing Healthcare Initiative Framework, the conference will provide health leaders and workers with the resources and tools to ensure their organization, colleagues, and patients can thrive.

Dr. Edwards and colleagues believe that addressing intergenerational perspectives is essential for preparing healthcare professionals for the rapidly changing healthcare landscape in the Clinical Learning Environment. As the healthcare industry evolves, it is important to ensure that the senior generation of educators imparts their valuable wisdom, experience, and knowledge. The younger generation integrates innovative ideas and concepts. Celebrating the difference and embracing the common threads across the generations can lead to better patient outcomes, improved medical research and innovation, and more effective collaboration among healthcare professionals. By establishing an environment of empathy and mutual respect between generations, we can recognize the unique attributes and create a cohesive, cross-generational network that fosters professional growth and continuous learning in our learners and leaders.

Dr. Edwards et al. will conduct a 60-minute interactive workshop entitled “Together we Grow: Achieving a Culture of Empathy in Medical Education to Enhance Learning Across Generations.” The goals of the workshop will be the following: (1) Define the generation gap and how it applies within the clinical learning environment, (2) Identify strategies to break down barriers and create a culture of mutual respect and empathy, and (3) Develop tools to improve communication, navigate intergenerational conflict and capitalize on generational strengths.
