Dr. Tomás Daviú Molinari

We are proud to congratulate Dr. Tomás Daviú Molinari on his recent publication in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, titled “Utilization of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting with Combined or Staged Carotid Revascularization in a National Sample.” His research team included Dr. Jashank Sharma, resident research fellow Dr. Claire Ferguson, research coordinator Danylo Orlov, medical student Christopher Chan, and mentors Dr. Panos Kougias and Dr. Sherene Sharath. His study examines national trends in the treatment of patients with coexisting carotid and coronary artery disease who undergo concurrent carotid revascularization with either carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or stenting (CAS) alongside coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Using two decades of data from the National Inpatient Sample, Dr. Daviú Molinari and his team analyzed over 12,000 patients undergoing these procedures. They found that the overall utilization of concurrent CABG and carotid revascularization has significantly declined over time, regardless of whether the procedures were performed in a staged or combined manner. Additionally, the study identified higher procedure volumes in urban teaching hospitals compared to rural settings, and hospital or facility factors such as annual CABG volume rather than patient factors were predictive of facilities performing these procedures.

This research provides important insights into evolving surgical practice patterns and resource allocation for patients with complex cardiovascular disease. Congratulations again to Dr. Daviú Molinari and the iNSPIRe team on this outstanding achievement!
