The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery congratulates PGY-4 resident Dr. Ahmed Eldeib, recent residency graduate Dr. Koby Herman, medical students Emily Yang and Stefani Manis, and pediatric surgeons Dr. Carlos Reck and Dr. Francisca Velcek on their recent publication in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Reports titled, “Late presentation of a Type IV sacrococcygeal teratoma in a 16-year-old female: A case report.”
The report described a 16-year-old female who presented with a large, infected mass in the presacral region. The patient underwent a combined abdominal and perineal surgical approach for tumor resection. The mass was ultimately diagnosed as a mature teratoma with purulent fluid. The patient was successfully discharged home one month postoperatively.
The authors highlight “the importance of considering sacrococcygeal teratomas, even in atypical presentations, and the potential danger of misdiagnosis. This case is particularly notable due to the rarity of both the late presentation and the superinfection of a mature sacrococcygeal teratoma. It underscores the need for heightened awareness among surgeons when managing atypical pelvic masses, particularly in older patients, to ensure that such rare cases are not overlooked.”
