The Department of Surgery proudly congratulates Chief Resident Dr. Jodi-Ann S. Edwards on her successful match into the Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore, Maryland.
Born in Manchester, Jamaica, and raised in South Florida, Dr. Edwards pursued medicine while being a young mother, guided by her faith and her family’s unwavering work ethic. She completed both her undergraduate and medical education at Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine before joining SUNY Downstate as a categorical General Surgery resident in 2017.
Dr. Edwards has distinguished herself as a clinician, researcher, and mentor. Her four years of dedicated research span both basic science fellowship—examining the molecular biology of acute pancreatitis—and clinical fellowship focused on surgical outcomes, quality of care, and healthcare disparities. She has published in JAMA Surgery and earned numerous honors, including election to Alpha Omega Alpha, the 2021 NMF Clinical Trials Research Emerging Investigator distinction, and the 2022 FAU Distinguished Alumni Award.
Beyond her academic and clinical achievements, Dr. Edwards has made a profound impact through mentorship and service. She directs the Downstate SEEDS program, advancing diversity in surgery, and volunteers locally and internationally to support various causes. Her leadership has been recognized with the SUNY Downstate Outstanding Service Award and the Department of Surgery Outstanding (Chairman’s) Citizenship Award.
At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Edwards will deepen her expertise in breast surgical oncology through advanced training, innovative research, and leadership development. This training will enhance Dr. Edwards' ability to manage complex cases and ensure personalized, patient-centered care.
Dr. Edwards aspires to a career defined by mentorship, equity, and compassionate care—values that continue to inspire and elevate the Department of Surgery.
