Dr. EnsorThe SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery was privileged to host Dr. Kelsey Ensor, Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon at NYC Health + Hospitals Kings County, Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Affiliate Medical Assistant Professor, CUNY School of Medicine. Dr. Ensor is an accomplished trauma and critical care surgeon and a skillful educator for residents and students. Dr. Ensor received her medical degree from NYU School of Medicine, trained in general surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and completed Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Jackson Health System.

Dr. Ensor’s Grand Rounds presentation was entitled “Un-Solicited Advice.” Her talk included a reflection on the challenges and positives of surgical residency. She gave some invaluable examples and advice inspired by her own experiences. For example, she discussed recognizing in herself as a learner that she needed extra resources to study for the board exams, and how she went about obtaining those resources and getting the needed preparation to ultimately successfully pass the exam. She discussed how a perspective shift can be helpful, such as reframing oral board preparation from something terrifying to something fun that can be enjoyed. The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery thanks Dr. Ensor for her impactful presentation and insightful advice to approach surgical development.
