The SUNY Downstate Department of surgery mourns the loss of Dr. Sushant Remersu, a SUNY Downstate General Surgery Residency program graduate and attending surgeon at South Brooklyn Health.  

Dr. Remersu attended medical school and completed internship at Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal, India. He trained in general surgery at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in Bronx, NY, before coming to SUNY Downstate’s general surgery program, where he completed his general surgery training. Dr. Remersu was remembered as an astute, prolific resident. He was fiercely intelligent, always scoring in the top percentile of the in-service training exams, technically talented, and a compassionate resident and teacher. Dr. Remersu went on to become an attending at South Brooklyn Health, where he continued to mentor Downstate residents, spearheaded the robotic surgery programs, and assisted in creating South Brooklyn Health’s own residency program. Dr. Remersu’s areas of expertise included general surgery, trauma, and minimally invasive surgery.   

Dr. Remersu’s life and accomplishments were remembered at a memorial ceremony on February 6th, 2025. Dr. Panos Kougias, Chair of the SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery, Dr. Melvin Stone, Chair of the King’s County Department of Surgery, Dr. Loren Harris, Chair of Richmond University Medical Center’s Department of Surgery, and Dr. Muthukumar Muthusamy, Surgery Chair of Surgery South Brooklyn Health, were all in attendance and spoke to Dr. Remersu’s legacy as a surgeon, teacher, and leader.  

“Dr. Remersu distinguished himself as an outstanding resident of our program and later became a highly respect attending surgeon at South Brooklyn Health. His exceptional clinical expertise was matched only by his unwavering warmth, compassion, and dedication to others. A cherished mentor, teacher, and friend, he inspired countless colleagues and trainees, leaving an enduring legacy of kindness and leadership. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Dr. Remersu’s legacy will continue to inspire us in our pursuit of excellence in surgical care.” - Dr. Panos Kougias
