Dr. Sherene Sharath and iNSPIRe Awarded One-Million-Dollar Grant

The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery extends its highest congratulations to Dr. Sherene Sharath, Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Health Services Research, for her one-million-dollar grant award from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The grant will support the study of the Long-Term Systemic Effects of Anemia in High-Risk Postoperative Patients (LEAP). Dr. Sharath will lead the project in partnership with co-Principal Investigator Dr. Panos Kougias.  

Using VA data, this study will evaluate long-term outcomes of different transfusion strategies in high-risk cardiac patients. Dr. Sharath is a renowned expert in big data analysis and advanced statistics, and she will provide outstanding leadership to guide the success of the project. The research will ultimately inform national guidelines for managing postoperative anemia in high-risk surgical patients. The grant is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to Dr. Sharath’s leadership and expertise in clinical health services research.
