Grand Rounds Speaker | Dr. Kevin Kniery

The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery was honored to host Dr. Kevin Kniery, MD, MPH, attending vascular surgeon at the Brooke Army Medical Center, founder and host of the famous and successful Behind the Knife surgical podcast series. Dr. Kniery received his medical degree and MPH from Tulane University. He completed his general surgery residency at Madigan Army Medical Center, during which he spent dedicated research time studying functional outcomes in limb transplantation and preventing abdominal adhesions. Following residency, he completed a vascular surgery fellowship at New York-Presbyterian.
Dr. Kniery’s Grand Rounds presentation was entitled “Swipe Right on Surgery | Tech Driven Training for Gen Z.” Dr. Kniery discussed the evolution of surgical learning materials and methods, from textbooks to videos, podcasts, and apps. He suggested several resources for learners, including the JOMI video series and the AI-driven OpenEvidence. Dr. Kniery shared the origin story of Behind the Knife, starting with an idea among friends, to an early interview series with attending surgeons, to becoming the globally renowned surgical education and community hub it is today. Dr. Kniery encouraged the audience to participate in surgical education and emphasized that everyone is an expert in something.
