Oct 20, 2025

The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery proud to recognize three of our residents for their outstanding research presentations at this year’s American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress (ACS 2025), which is one of the premier national meetings in academic surgery.
Dr. Claire Ferguson presented “Evolving Trends in Pulmonary Embolism Incidence and Procedural Management,”
an analysis highlighting shifting patterns in pulmonary embolism management and the
implications for patient outcomes and procedural practice.
Dr. Pablo Cuartas shared his work, “Economics of Pulmonary Embolism Care in a 23-Year Resource Utilization
Study,” providing valuable insights into the long-term economic and healthcare resource
trends associated with this high-impact condition.
Dr. John Perrotti presented “Non-Clinical Factors Predicting Surgical Management of Diverticulitis:
Colostomy vs. Primary Anastomosis,” exploring how socioeconomic and hospital-level
factors influence operative decision-making in colorectal surgery.
These presentations exemplify the scholarly strength and research diversity within our residency program, underscoring Downstate’s growing impact on national surgical discourse. Congratulations to Drs. Ferguson, Cuartas, and Perrotti on this impressive achievement!
