Dr. Panos Kougias to Present at the American Surgical Association
Mar 2, 2025
The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery congratulates Dr. Panos Kougias and the iNSPIRe team Dr. Sherene Sharath, Dr. Sundar Natarajan, Dr. David Berger, Dr. Claire Ferguson, Steven Medvedovsky, and Danylo Orlov for the acceptance of the abstract titled, “Turning Tides: Evolving Comorbidity Profiles, Demographic Shift, and the Unexpected Rise of Major Lower Extremity Amputations.”
Dr. Kougias’s research describes a critical rise in the incidence of major lower extremity amputations and a shift in predictive factors to traits of metabolic syndrome. Major lower extremity Amputations are a pivotal public health issue as amputation carries a high morbidity and mortality. Understanding the etiology and trends in amputation will allow for better public health planning and targeted intervention to prevent amputation in vulnerable patients. This study also highlights a burgeoning collaboration between the SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery and the NYU Department of Medicine, represented by Dr. Natarajan. We look forward to our continued collaboration and the tangible impact that our work together may have on patient lives.
Dr. Kougias will be presenting the abstract at the 145th Annual Meeting of the American Surgical Association April 24-26 in San Diego, California. The American Surgical Association is the oldest and most prestigious surgical organization in the United States.
