Grand Rounds Spotlight | Dr. Ramy Gilani on Lessons from Surgical Complications
Dec 31, 2025
The Department of Surgery was honored to welcome Ramy Gilani, MD – Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Vascular Surgery & Endovascular
Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine and Chief of Vascular Surgery at Ben Taub Hospital – for Grand Rounds on “Complications in Surgery | Lessons for Life.” Dr. Gilani approached complications not as rare occurrences, but as predictable tests of preparation, judgment,
and teamwork that every surgeon will face over a career. He stressed the importance of recognizing early warning signs when a postoperative
course begins to drift from expectations and intervening before minor issues escalate
into major setbacks. The talk offered practical, broadly applicable lessons that resonated across services and training levels, emphasizing that excellence
in surgery is defined not by the absence of complications, but by how we anticipate, manage, and learn from them.
