Celebrating Memorial Day

May 27, 2022

Monday, May 30, our country will celebrate Memorial Day, the holiday established to pay homage to the valiant soldiers who nobly sacrificed their lives while in combat—selflessly fighting to protect our freedom.

From the inception of our nation’s armed forces, more than 40 million men and women have booted up to fearlessly serve on the frontlines of perilous warfare. Honorably, more than half a million American Soldiers have sacrificed their lives in the name of liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Many of these heroes call Brooklyn home with a significant number of retired veterans serving Downstate in various capacities. Some of our students, faculty, and staff, as well as members of their families, also actively serve or are veterans of the military.

In commemoration of this proud holiday, I ask that we all join in celebration of our fallen heroes—and though we hope for brighter days ahead, let us remember to celebrate with care.

THANK YOU to all of the intrepid men and women who have served and who currently serve in the United States Armed Forces to protect us daily.

May we all enjoy a safer, happier, and healthier 2022 Memorial Day!
