Aunt Minnie Recognizes Groundbreaking Research In Workload Management For Radiology Departments

Brooklyn, NY – SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University today announced that premier radiology publication Aunt Minnie has awarded four researchers from SUNY Downstate, Dr. Robert Alexander, Dr. Stephen Waite, Dr. Susanna Martinez-Conde and Dr. Stephen Macknik, the 2022 Scientific Paper of the Year award for their research paper titled, “Mandating Limits on Workload, Duty, and Speed in Radiology”. The contributors to this work outside of Downstate include Michael A. Bruno from the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Department of Radiology, Elizabeth A. Krupinski from the Emory University Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, and Leonard Berlin from the Rush University Medical College Department of Radiology and University of Illinois.

The research, published in Radiology in June 2022, examines the relationship between interpretation speed and error rates in radiology, the potential influence of artificial intelligence on reading speed and error rates, and the possible outcomes of imposed limits on both caseload and duty hours.

“Research and innovation continue to guide the great work of our Downstate faculty, who prove time and time again our commitment to advancing knowledge through cutting edge research,” said Downstate senior vice president for research David Christini, Ph.D. “As the workloads our healthcare workers bear continue to grow, this research is a key step forward in understanding how to ensure every patient receives the thorough and rapid care they deserve, while also ensuring our workers are not overburdened, and are given the time needed to ensure accurate interpretation of testing results. I am honored to congratulate the authors for this impressive and well-deserved award, and I look forward to their continued advancements.”

The Aunt Minnie Scientific Paper of the Year award was announced as part of the 2022 edition of the Minnies, AuntMinnie.com's campaign to recognize the best and brightest in medical imaging. Nominations for this year’s campaign included over 200 candidates in 14 categories, ranging from Most Influential Radiology Researcher to Best Educational Mobile App. Finalists are selected and voted upon by an expert panel of radiology luminaries.
