SUNY Downstate Stands in Solidarity With The NYPD

By Office of Communications & Marketing | Jan 27, 2022

The SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University community stands in solidarity with the families of Officers Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora, both of whom were killed in the line of duty. Our thoughts are also with the NYPD and all law enforcement agencies nationwide that are affected by this senseless tragedy.

When an officer dies in the line of duty, an entire community pauses in the sorrow reserved for those who protect us every day. But, when they are young as 22 and 27, it hits home even more deeply.

We extend a special note of condolence to our NYPD partners in our neighboring precincts, with whom we work closely to keep our campus and our community safe.

For every officer lost in the line of duty, police precincts and other entities pay special homage to them with purple bunting and flags flown at half-staff. The flags at Downstate will fly at half-mast on Friday, January 28, when Officer Rivera will be laid to rest, and again when Officer Mora’s funeral is announced. UPD officers will represent Downstate each time.

Thank you to officers everywhere, including officers within University Police Department at Downstate who keep us all safe, for all you do, and all you represent.
