Medical Students Bryan Su and Alex Shen Awarded Alumni Summer Research Fellowship

The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery congratulates medical students Bryan Su and Alex Shen on being awarded the Alumni Summer Research Fellowship. 

Their project, titled “Social Determinants of Health in the Treatment of Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia: A National Analysis Using the HCUP NIS, 2000–2022,” will examine how social determinants of health shape the treatment of chronic limb-threatening ischemia across the United States. 

Using the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project National Inpatient Sample, Bryan and Alex will explore patient- and system-level factors that may influence care for individuals with advanced vascular disease. Their work reflects an important commitment to better understanding disparities in surgical and vascular care.
