May 31, 2026
The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery congratulates Dr. Uma Mahajan and Dr. John Perotti on the acceptance of their research studies for oral presentation at the 2026 American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress in Washington, DC.
Dr. Mahajan’s study titled, “Association of Appendectomy with Future Development of Inflammatory Bowel Disease,” examines whether appendectomy is associated with long-term development of inflammatory
bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

Dr. Perotti’s study titled, “In-hospital Mortality Trends and Predictors After Surgical Management of Acute Diverticulitis,” investigates sociodemographic and facility predictors of mortality for patients undergoing surgical intervention for acute diverticulitis.
The ACS Clinical Congress is one of the leading educational meetings in surgery. It brings together surgeons, residents, medical students, and other healthcare professionals from around the world to learn about the latest advances in the field. The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery is proud to have Dr. Mahajan and Dr. Perotti representing the department at this premier conference and looks forward to their presentations. The Department of Surgery has maintained a continuous presence at ACS over the past four years.
