Dr. Sukaina Alikhan’s Oral Presentation Accepted at World Trauma Congress

The Department of Surgery is proud to recognize Sukaina Alikhan, MD, PGY-4, on the acceptance of her abstract for an oral presentation at the World Trauma Congress this past April in Sweden. Her work, completed in collaboration with the Kings County Trauma Department, focuses on intra-abdominal infections following emergent colonic surgery, a common and significant postoperative complication in this high-risk patient population. 

This retrospective single-site study at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County evaluated a protocol recommending piperacillin/tazobactam as the preoperative antimicrobial agent for emergent abdominal operations, including trauma-related cases. Dr. Alikhan’s acceptance to present this work at an international meeting is an outstanding achievement and reflects the strength of resident scholarship within our program. We congratulate Dr. Alikhan on this accomplishment and look forward to seeing her represent Downstate Surgery on an international stage.
