Nurses Praised for Outstanding Teamwork
Brooklyn, NY - The nursing team in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University's University Hospital at Downstate has been selected to receive the first Image of Nursing in Clinical Practice Award. The award is sponsored by HCPro, Inc., a provider of nursing education and management resources.
The five members of the nursing team were recognized for achieving clinical excellence in several key areas. Nurses Marcia Warner, RN, MA, Juliette Lowe, RN, BSN, MSN, CNS, and Jemma Bascombe-Gordon, RN, developed care measures to prevent central line infections, which helped the NICU achieve a 100 percent compliance rate.
Sherryl Hazzard, RN, coordinates discharge planning and teaches parents how to care for their babies after they bring them home. Lashon Pitter, RN, MSN, MBA, developed a patient satisfaction survey to obtain feedback from parents, and the responses have been very positive.
“This team demonstrates that the image of nursing goes beyond the bedside,” says Shelly Cohen, RN, one of the judges. “Their overt support for their professional organization and recognition of the value of specialty certification are essential elements for nursing’s professional image.”
The award will be presented during the HCPro 2009 Nursing Leadership Summit on September 20–23. The award recipients will also be profiled in several nursing online and print publications, including Strategies for Nurse Managers.
