Dr. Richard M. Rosenfeld Named Professor and Chair of Otolaryngology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University

Brooklyn, NY - Richard M. Rosenfeld, MD, MPH, has been named professor and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, it was announced by Ian L. Taylor, MD, PhD, senior vice president for biomedical education and research and dean of the College of Medicine. Dr. Rosenfeld has been a member of the SUNY Downstate faculty since 1992, serving as director of the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology. He has also been chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at The Long Island College Hospital since 2007. He succeeds Frank E. Lucente, MD, who will continue as professor of otolaryngology and vice dean for graduate medical education and affiliations at SUNY Downstate.

A leader in academic medicine, Dr. Rosenfeld was born in New York City, attended Hamilton College and the SUNY Buffalo College of Medicine, and trained as a resident in surgery and then in otolaryngology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.  He pursued further subspecialty training in pediatric otolaryngology at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he also earned his Master in Public Health degree. After completing a NIH research fellowship and a clinical fellowship, he served as a faculty member at George Washington University, before joining Downstate as an assistant professor in 1992, reaching the rank of full professor in 1999.

In the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Rosenfeld has become an internationally known expert in otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear) and in evidence-based medicine.  His research and scholarly work has resulted in the publication of more than 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals and numerous book chapters and reviews.  He is frequently invited to speak at conferences and other professional meetings and to join editorial boards.  Since 2006, he has served as editor-in-chief of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the official journal of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS).  In recent years, he has become known as a leading thinker in the field of performance improvement and became a member of the American Medical Association’s Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement in 2006.  Dr. Rosenfeld has authored numerous national practice guidelines and currently chairs guideline development for the AAO-HNS.

Dr. Rosenfeld will continue to serve as chairman of otolaryngology at The Long Island College Hospital and will be director of Downstate’s otolaryngology residency training program.
