London’s Fashion Industry Teams with SUNY Downstate to Educate Youth about AIDS:

Education and Fashion Show for Youth, May 8

Brookly, NY - SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University's 4th annual Dine & Learn Healthy Youth Symposium – this year titled “NYC Against HIV: Education and Fashion Show” – will take place Friday, May 8, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Midwood High School at Brooklyn College, 2839 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, 11210 (between Campus and Glenwood Roads).

The fashion show presentation will use symbolism to raise HIV/AIDS awareness/prevention by teaching youth the advantages of delaying sexual activities as well as the benefits of practicing safer sex. Major young designers from London are among those partnering to educate young people about HIV transmission, through the auspices of Nineteen74.com, a fashion industry networking site in Great Britain.

In addition to Nineteen74.com and Midwood High School, SUNY Downstate’s partners for this event include Designers Against AIDS and Sesame Flyers International, Inc.

Physicians from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and other experts will offer talks on diabetes, obesity, STDs/ HIV/AIDS, and violence prevention.

There will be free health screenings and counseling and noninvasive screenings for STDs and rapid HIV testing.

Young people age 13 and older are invited but those between 13 and 17 must have consent forms signed by a parent or guardian.

More than 50 exhibitors/organizations will be on hand to offer youth health information and other support services in the areas of education/career development, fitness/weight loss, nutrition, finance, mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, managed care, skin, hair and dental care, and youth empowerment.

In addition, young people will have the opportunity to submit applications to community-based Summer Youth Employment Program providers. Attendees will receive The Life Saver: A Healthy Youth Resource Guide, with information on accessing physicians, programs, services, and resources in their community.

A “Stomp Out AIDS” presentation by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Midwood Step Team and music by DJ E/NYCE and Major Harris are other highlights.

Dinner will be served and gift bags will be distributed to each youth as a token of appreciation for his/her participation. Some participants will also win prizes (gift cards, certificates and coupons) during the answer/question sessions.
