Miriam Vincent Named Family Medicine Educator of the Year

May 6, 2009

The New York State Academy of Family Physicians has selected Miriam Vincent, MD, PhD, as its 2009 Family Medicine Educator of the Year. She will be honored at the Academy’s Annual Congress in June.

“I know of no other family physician in New York State who has accomplished as much professional and academic achievement,” says the Academy’s president-elect, Mark H. Krotowski, MD. Dr. Vincent was nominated for the award by the Kings County Academy of Family Physicians, of which she is immediate past president.

Dr. Vincent has practiced family medicine for more than 25 years and headed the Department of Family Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University for almost two decades. A talented teacher and dynamic personality, she has demonstrated great commitment to the medical students and residents under her care, as well as to her professional colleagues.

In addition to delivering continuing medical education (CME) lectures to residents and faculty at academic centers throughout Brooklyn and Queens, she has participated on the Governor’s Council for Graduate Medical Education, in committee work for the New York State Department of Health, and in the work of the Council on Graduate Medical Education to develop health and education policy.

An indefatigable worker, Dr. Vincent recently earned a PhD and is currently studying for a law degree, while also maintaining a full complement of research projects, grant writings, teaching, and administrative duties. Despite these numerous commitments, she has found time to organize an active student Family Medicine Club at Downstate. As a measure of her popularity among students, the graduating medical class last year awarded her the Clinical Teacher of the Year Award.
