Seven Downstate Faculty and Staff Honored for Excellence
Brooklyn, NY - SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher has announced the 2008-09 Academic Year recipients of the Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence.
Seven members of the Downstate community were selected to receive awards, which provide SUNY-wide recognition and underscore SUNY’s commitment to sustaining intellectual vibrancy, providing the highest quality of instruction, and serving the public good.
Award categories include Teaching, Faculty Service, Professional Service, Librarianship, Scholarship and Creative Activities, and Classified Service (a new category this year).
Downstate faculty and staff selected for this year’s Chancellor’s Award include:
Audrée A. Bendo, MD, professor of anesthesiology, residency program director, and vice chair for education, honored for professional service
Marjorie Garrick, University Police, honored for classified service
Betty Jung, RN, nurse-educator, Center for Community Health Promotion and Wellness, honored for classified service
Tatyana V. Pestova, DSc, PhD, assistant professor of microbiology and immunology, honored for scholarship and creative activities
Anthony Pollock, electrician, Facilities Management and Development, honored for classified service
Sheryl M. Zang, EdD, FNP, RN, clinical associate professor of nursing, honored for faculty service
Franklin R. Scalia, PhD, professor of anatomy and cell biology, honored for teaching excellence
Chancellor Zimpher described the honorees as role models within SUNY. “These awards honor excellence in the classroom and within the wonderful communities that host our campuses,” she said. “Congratulations to all of the faculty and staff receiving these awards, and thank you for your continued commitment to educating and mentoring our students.”
Speaking on behalf of the Downstate community, President John LaRosa, MD, thanked the award winners for their contributions to the campus. “You have brought honor to our institution,” he said, “and we are profoundly grateful to you.”
The honorees will receive a certificate and a Chancellor’s Excellence Medallion. Downstate will host an event in the fall to honoree recipients.
