Food Pantry

Our Vision

Food PantryA lack of regular access to food is an issue that plagues approximately half of today’s college student’s according to a recent study. This is true for graduate and professional students. To combat this, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo committed that New York State would be the first state in the nation to have a comprehensive program to combat student hunger. We are proud to a part of that effort here at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University! Your donation provides critically needed non-perishable food and other essentials for our community.

Suggested Products List

  • Vegetables: Canned Vegetables, Tomato Sauce, Vegetable Soups, Broth (low sodium preferred)
  • Fruits: Canned Fruits, Dried Fruits, 100% Fruit Juices
  • Proteins: Beans canned or dry, Peanut Butter, Nuts, Canned Meats, Tuna, Salmon, Stews
  • Grains: Rice, Pasta, Cold/Hot Cereal, Flour/Cornmeal/Baking Mixes, Granola Bars, Juice/Water/Soda
  • Items: Personal Care and Hygiene Items

This is only a suggestion list, feel free to bring what you can.

Location

We are located at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University which provides all students access to an on-campus food pantry located in the Student Center at 394 Lenox Road. The food pantry is available during the hours the Student Center is open. The food pantry's motto is: "Take what you need, bring what you can"

Donations

The Student Center is accepting donations for non-perishable, non-expired goods and personal care items to support the pantry. If you wish to donate items for the pantry, please drop them off or contact us and will make arrangements for pick up.

All financial donations are welcomed.  Checks or cash can be dropped off at the Student Center Information Desk.  Please make check donations payable to “FSA of DMC-Acct 70383-015”. Checks can also be mailed to:

Tax Information

The Student Center Governing Board (SCGB) Food Pantry is a registered DMC student organization whose funds are administered by the Faculty Student Assn of Downstate Medical Center, Inc. which is an official IRS 501(c)3 not for profit tax-exempt charitable organization. By making your donation via the PayPal Donate button or following the specific physical checks instructions above, your donation will qualify on your personal income tax as a charitable donation to the extent permitted by IRS regulation and law. Personal donors of $250 or more, or for any amount upon request, will receive an IRS charitable donation acknowledgement letter; Corporation donors who need an IRS Form W-9 should contact the FSA Business Office.

Our Partnerships

SUNY Downstate has connected with two local pantries which students and members of the community can use.

Masbia of Flatbush

Provides pantry take-home packages every Thursday from 7–10:00am and Sunday–Thursday from 5–6:00pm. For more information visit: https://www.masbia.org/pantry or call 718-534-7410.
