Downstate Welcomes New Pediatric Surgeon | Carlos Reck, MD

Dr. Carlos Reck

The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery welcomes Carlos Reck, MD, FAAP, FACS as the Associate Director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Reck joins Dr. Francisca Velcek, the Director of Pediatric Surgery, to continue a legacy of compassionate, high-quality care for Downstate's pediatric patients.   

Dr. Reck was born in the Galapagos Islands. He embarked on his medical journey at Universidad San Francisco de Quito, where he graduated top of his class, earning cum laude distinction and receiving honors in all internship rotations. Following his graduation, he pursued Pediatrics at Long Island College Hospital/Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City from July 2005 to July 2008. It was during his Pediatric Residency at Long Island College Hospital that he met Dr. Velcek. Upon completing his residency, he was awarded the Joseph R. Bongiorno Award for exemplary compassion, professionalism, and scholarship, and achieved board certification from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Reck continued his specialization in Pediatric Surgery at Medizinische Universität Wien in Vienna, Austria, becoming board-certified by the Austrian Medical Chamber. He further honed his skills as a Clinical Fellow in Colorectal Pediatric Surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, followed by a Research Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery there.

He served as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. His expertise was further recognized with the Fellow American College of Surgeons title in October 2021, and he was awarded the PD (Priv. Doz. – venia legendi) from the Medical University of Vienna in 2022.

Dr. Reck's career highlights include co-authoring "Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Surgery: Case Studies" published by Taylor & Francis Ltd in June 2017. He co-founded and chaired "Helping Hands for Anorectal Malformations," a nonprofit focused on treating children with anal atresia from developing countries.

He served as the Director of Pediatric Surgery at Landesklinikum Mödling – Landesgesundheitsagentur Niederösterreich, Mödling, Austria, from October 2021 to October 2023. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Associate Division Chief at the Division of Pediatric Surgery, SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery, starting from February 2024.

Dr. Reck is married with two daughters, ages 6 and 9, highlighting his role as a dedicated family man alongside his professional achievements.
