Undergraduate Radiology Education
The faculty and residents of the department of radiology play an active role in medical student education at the College of Medicine at SUNY Downstate throughout their four years of training. During their first year, we lead a series of lectures on normal radiologic anatomy and provide the with an online interactive digital imaging atlas. During their second year, we advance to faculty-led small group sessions in a case-based learning format which goes over common radiologic diseases. Early in their third year, during the Transitional Clerkship, we lead a session discussing the indications for various imaging modalities, emphasizing the strengths and limitations of each modality.
Diagnostic Radiology (course # RADI 4550) is a required course taken by all 4th year medical students. We also offer a 2-week elective clinical rotation (course # RADI 4551) exposing medical students to all the subspecialties within Radiology. In addition we offer an Advanced Diagnostic Imaging course which is tailored to individual students interests. Furthermore, we offer 4-week electives in Neuroradiology, Musculoskeletal Radiology and Interventional Radiology.
Radiology faculty also act as advisors for students applying to Radiology, meeting with them as a group and individually to help them through the application and interview process for residency.
