Ultrasound

Ultrasonography is a well established, effective diagnostic modality utilizing high frequency ultrasound waves to produce images allowing the consulting radiologist to assist the referring physician in the diagnosis and management of their patients. Images are obtained in real time utilizing a combination of two-dimensional real time gray scale, and color and spectral wave from Doppler evaluation.

Ultrasound is used for diagnosis, management, and follow-up in many areas throughout the body. The various applications include:

  • Obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound.
  • Thoracic, abdominal and pelvic ultrasound and including: liver, spleen, gallbladder and biliary tract, pancreas, adrenal glands, renal, adrenal, retroperitoneum, peritoneal cavity, diaphragm, chest and thoracic cavity, bladder.
  • Vascular imaging including carotid, abdominal, intracranial peripheral arterial and peripheral venous vascular evaluation.
  • Neural sonography.
  • Evaluation of superficial structures, such as breast, thyroid, scrotum and musculoskeletal areas.

Utilization of high frequency sound waves rather than iodizing radiation makes ultrasound ideal for obstetric and gynecologic and pediatric imaging. Ultrasound is used in the emergency setting for rapid diagnosis of medical, surgical, obstetrical and gynecologic emergencies.

The section of diagnostic ultrasound within the department of radiology utilizes state-of-art equipment with studies supervised and performed by Board Certified Radiologists. The ultrasound studies can be correlated with other studies in the radiology department to provide the referring clinicians with the necessary information to diagnose and manage their patients.

The Department of Radiology offers ultrasound services to outpatients, in-patients and emergency patients. Ultrasound is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year.
