Surgery

The majority of our surgical training is performed at the Brooklyn VA Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Siegel and several other renowned Mohs Surgeons and procedural dermatologists. Every year, each resident spends two months as a member of the surgery team. First year residents initially perform simple excisions on the trunk and extremities, while second year residents further develop their fine surgical skills by performing surgeries on more cosmetically-sensitive skin areas, such as the face, scalp, neck, and ear. In their final year of residency, residents work with our Mohs surgeons to learn more advanced surgical techniques, including flaps, grafts, and Mohs surgery. At Kings County Hospital Center, second year residents independently perform surgeries under attending supervision once weekly while on their core consult rotation. Surgical procedures typically include earlobe repair, keloid excision, complex nail procedures, cyst removal, and skin cancer excisions.

Cosmetics and Lasers

Our core clinical site for aesthetics training is University Hospital (SUNY). During cosmetic rotations, third year residents spend one afternoon clinic a week performing procedures including chemical peels, sclerotherapy, neuromodulator and filler injections, laser hair reduction, as well as pulsed-dye laser and intense pulsed light treatments. 

Residents are also able to perform a variety of cosmetic procedures during rotations at the Brooklyn VA Hospital. Residents administer permanent fillers for HIV lipoatrophy, chemical peels including Jessners/trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels for actinic damage, low-current radiosurgery for obliteration of facial telangiectasias, photodynamic therapy (PDT) for sun-damaged skin, and neuromodulators for hyperhidrosis. Residents are also instructed in the use of fractionated laser devices for the treatment of actinic damage in addition to surgical, acne, and combat scars.

As part of academic day, senior residents participate in one-on-one cosmetic sessions with our specialist attendings, performing neuromodulator and filler injections, as well as laser and light treatments. Furthermore, our cosmetic curriculum includes small group hands-on sessions on topics such as "Introduction to Injectables and Cannula Work", "The Anatomy of Injectables," and "The Art of Injectables: The Use of Phi to Achieve Optimal Beauty."
