Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Department of Dermatology at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. As the head of one of the oldest and largest dermatology training services in the country, I am proud to introduce you to our program. I encourage you to explore our comprehensive and innovative website.

Our program is located in the heart of East Flatbush, New York. Our residents rotate in clinics throughout Brooklyn, offering care to a wide range of patients throughout the borough. Brooklyn is among the most exciting cities to live and offers a wonderful culture with a diverse population, as well as some of the best restaurants, museums, and sporting events New York City has to offer.

The Department of Dermatology is noted for producing some of the most well-trained dermatologists in the country. Many of our trainees have made notable contributions to the field of dermatology and our residents have been accepted into some of the most prestigious fellowships in medical dermatology, procedural dermatology, pediatric dermatology, and dermatopathology.

At Downstate, we are devoted to our patients and take great pride in treating our multicultural patient population with the best dermatologic care possible. The Kings County Hospital Center, University Hospital of Brooklyn, and the Veterans Affairs Administration Hospital comprise our main campuses and offer a wide range of training opportunities. We run high-volume clinics as well as inpatient consultation services supervised by seasoned attendings, who provide our residents with excellent training in pediatric dermatology, procedural dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, and dermatopathology.

We are actively engaged in basic science and clinical research endeavors, such as investigating novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of childhood vascular lesions and researching new treatments for psoriasis, acne, and rosacea. Our dermatologists, dermatologic surgeons, and dermatopathologists are nationally renowned leaders in their fields and are devoted to training a new generation of clinicians.

In addition, our medical school is outstanding. Our school is one of the oldest and largest in the country, and we have one of the most talented student bodies. In 2013, Downstate ranked in the 81st percentile in terms of graduates practicing in underserved areas and ranked in the 93rd percentile with regards to graduates becoming faculty in academic medical centers. Downstate is the largest producer of physicians for Brooklyn and New York City, and thus serves as a key source of physicians for the nation.

It is a privilege for me to be part of the leadership team guiding this outstanding dermatology department. I hope our website provides you with a broad introduction to who we are and what we do.
