Policy on House Staff Post Graduate Year Levels

UHB & IFR Salaried Only

Accredited training program: a training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for
Graduate Medical Education, the American Dental Association, the American Podiatry
Association, the American Osteopathic Association, or the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada.

Determination of a house staff physician's post graduate level for appointment shall be based
upon the following criteria:

  1. A house staff physician who has not completed at least one year of service in an
accredited training program shall be placed at the postgraduate year 1 level.
  2. A house staff physician who has completed one or more years of service in an accredited
training program and is transferring within the specialty can be upgraded for the
cumulative total of post graduate year levels completed (ie. if a house staff physician has
completed two years in an accredited Internal Medicine program he/she can be appointed
at the post graduate year 3 level in our Internal Medicine program).
  3. A house staff physician who has completed one or more years of service in an accredited
training program and is applying for residency in a specialty other than that in which
he/she has completed training in shall be placed at a post graduate level that cannot
exceed one year. If the house staff physician has completed one or more years of service
in an accredited training program which is a prerequisite for another program (ie. in the
case of Orthopedic Surgery, a resident who has completed the Surgery requirement)
he/she can be fully credited for those years of service.
  4. In the event that some or all of the house staff physician's prior training has been
completed in a non-accredited program he/she can only be granted consideration for
those years which have been conducted in the accredited program. Any considerations
otherwise must be reviewed and recommended by the specialty board and approved by
the Provost/Vice President of Clinical Affairs, subsequent to a determination to the post
graduate year level which may be appropriate.
  5. Determination of a house staff physician's salary will be based upon the postgraduate
year training level he/she has been placed in. This is standard policy and must be
    adhered to.
