Orbital/eye socket disease

Thyroid eye / Graves disease, orbital mass, orbital inflammation, orbital cancer

Thyroid Eye Disease - Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an inflammatory condition associated with thyroid disorders including Graves’ disease and hypothyroidism. Common symptoms include bulging of the eyes, double vision, ocular pain, and change in eyelid position. Severe disease can cause compression of the optic nerve leading to decreased vision. There are multiple treatment options for thyroid eye disease. Mild disease can be managed with lubricating drops and ointment. Moderate to severe disease may require additional medical therapies including corticosteroids and radiation. A new medication, teprotumumab, was recently approved that shows great promise in the medical treatment of thyroid eye disease. When needed, surgical options are available to treat the changes associated with thyroid eye disease. Some of these options can improve bulging eyes (orbital decompression), double vision (strabismus surgery), and eyelid retraction repair.

Orbital Mass - Orbital tumors are tumors that occur behind the eye. These tumors can be benign or malignant and may cause changes in vision, bulging of the eye, and double vision. If an orbital tumor is suspected, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be performed. A biopsy or removal of the mass may be performed.
