Request for Election Nominations

At Downstate, the Local “University Senate” is called the “Downstate Assembly of the Faculty and Professional Staff (DAFPS).”  Matters of concern to the faculty and staff are to be relayed to this committee for consideration.  There is an Executive Committee of 24 members.  This committee includes the Presiding Officer (PO), PO Elect, and Secretary of the DAFPS, four University Senators and four Alternate Senators, all of whom are all elected by the Full Assembly.  Each of the Senator's votes in the UFS at Plenary meetings three times a year.  Other integral members of the Executive Committee are the elected POs and PO Elects from each of the five Schools/Colleges, and one (non-voting) Student member.  The DAFPS and its Executive Committee is advisory to the President of Downstate, and the SUNY University Faculty Senate (UFS), on which the Senators serve, is advisory to the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees of SUNY.

The Downstate Assembly of Faculty and Professional Staff is responsible for the development and implementation of programs and policies in accordance with the standards for Articles of Governance of the State University Faculty Senate, subject to the authority of the State University Board of Trustees.

We seek nominations (these may be self-nominations) for the following open position:

  • University Faculty Senator: Two (2) positions (3-year term of office)
  • University Faculty Senator – Alternate: Two (2) positions (3-year term of office)

Any member of the Downstate Faculty and Professional Staff Assembly who has been a member for at least 12 months is eligible to run for Senator except the Dean of each of the constituent schools and colleges.

An individual shall not simultaneously hold more than one of the following positions: Presiding Officer of the Downstate Assembly of Faculty and Professional Staff, Senator, Alternate Senator. Additionally, an individual shall not simultaneously hold more than one of the following positions of the Downstate Assembly of Faculty and Professional Staff: Presiding Officer, Presiding Officer-Elect, and Secretary. In addition, an individual shall not simultaneously hold the position of Presiding Officer of the Downstate Assembly of Faculty and Professional Staff and Presiding Officer of the Faculty and Professional Staff Assembly of one of the constituent schools or colleges.

Nominations may be submitted via the DAFPS Nominations from Friday, May 1 through Friday, May 15, 2026, at 11:59PM.

The Downstate Assembly will hold a special meeting to announce the slate and solicit nominations from the floor on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
