Guidelines for Living in the Residence Halls

As with any public space where large groups of people live together, there are regulations designed to protect the safety and well-being of our community. Living in a New York City high-rise makes fire safety and prevention especially critical. Please review the following guidelines carefully regarding permissible and prohibited items in the residence halls:

Pets With the exception of non-poisonous, non-aggressive fish, pets are strictly prohibited in the residence halls. Fish tanks must not exceed 10 gallons in size and must be registered with the Office of Residential Life and Services upon arrival.

Microwave Ovens Microwave ovens are permitted in studio and one-bedroom apartments. While microwaves are not allowed in standard rooms, commercial-grade microwave ovens are available for resident use on the 2nd and 3rd floors of both residence halls.

Fire Safety To minimize fire hazards, candles, incense, halogen lamps, portable space heaters, and appliances with open heating coils (e.g., hot plates, burners) are strictly prohibited. Students in standard rooms may not bring toaster ovens, mini-grills, or griddles. Gas-operated appliances (propane or butane) are also prohibited.

Electrical & Appliance Regulations Please exercise caution with electrical appliances. Use surge protectors rather than standard extension cords whenever possible; additional outlets have been installed in rooms to minimize cord usage.

• Refrigerators: Refrigerators exceeding 4.9 cubic feet are prohibited.

• Air Conditioners: Air conditioners are not permitted without prior written authorization from the Office of Residential Life and Services.
