Guidelines for Living in the Residence Halls

As with any public space where large groups of people live together, there are regulations designed to promote and protect the safety of persons living in the community. Living in a New York City high rise, it is extremely important that we all work together to reduce the threat of fire and other potential threats to the comfort and safety of our students. Please review the following list carefully, as it will let you know what items are and are not permissible in the residence halls.

Pets

With the exception of fish, pets are not permitted in the residence halls. However, the fish tank may be no larger than ten gallons in size, may not contain any poisonous or aggressive species, and must be registered with the Office of Residential Life and Services upon your arrival in the residence halls.

Microwave Ovens

Microwave ovens are permitted in studio and one-bedroom apartments, but not in standard rooms. There are commercial grade microwave ovens on the 2^nd and 3^rd floors of both residence halls that are available for students living in standard rooms.

Fire Safety

Due to the threat of fire, candles, incense, and halogen lamps are not permitted in the residence halls. Portable space heaters and any items with open coils such as hot plates or small burners are not permitted in the residence halls. In addition, students living in standard rooms should not bring toaster ovens, mini-grills, or griddles when moving into the residence halls as the presence and use of these items in standard rooms increases the threat of fire. Propane or butane gas operated appliances are also prohibited.

Electrical Hazards

Students are encouraged to exercise great care with any electrical appliances. As a general rule, surge protectors should be used and the use of extension cords must be minimal. Additional outlets have been added to student rooms in order to minimize the use of these items. Nonetheless, students are prohibited from bringing refrigerators to campus that are in excess of 4.9 cubic feet. Air conditioners are also prohibited in student rooms with out written authorization and approval from the Office of Residential Life and Services.
