The Residence Halls

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University maintains two residential facilities for full-time students in the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing, the School of Health Professions (SOHP), and the School of Graduate Studies. The Office of Residential Life and Services may also provide temporary housing for eligible faculty, staff, and visiting students as well as residents.

These facilities, located on the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University campus, feature traditional residence hall and apartment-style units available for student occupancy, as well as rooms for transient guests. The facilities are staffed by professional managers, Resident Directors, and University Police personnel.


Transient Guest Eligibility Requirements

A transient guest is eligible for on-campus housing under the following conditions:

  1. They are associated with SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in a direct capacity (e.g., full-time employees or department-sponsored guests).
  2. If guest rooms are available.
  3. If guest rooms are fully occupied, student apartments are available and there are no full-time students on the housing waitlist.

Housing Options

Studio Apartments

Either single/double occupancy: Each apartment contains a bathroom and kitchenette unit.

Two-Bedroom Apartments

Double Occupancy (Two occupants per apartment): Each apartment contains a bathroom and kitchenette unit.

Requests for Accommodations

August 1 to May 31

Eligible transient guest applicants must comply with the following procedures:

  • Submit Application: Submit a Transient Guest Housing Application to the Office of Residential Life and Services at least six weeks before your intended check-in date. If you need an application, please contact our office at (718) 270-1466.

  • Submit Documentation: Forward all documentation supporting your eligibility for on-campus housing (such as a copy of your appointment papers or an official letter from your sponsoring department) to the Office of Residential Life and Services.

Please note: Housing is not guaranteed to all applicants. Assignments are made on a space-available basis in the order applications are received. Transient guests will only be accommodated for the timeframe specified in their confirmation packet.

General Housing Information

  1. Pets: Pets are strictly prohibited.

  2. Air Conditioners: Guests may not install their own window air conditioners. While residence hall apartments are not pre-air-conditioned, you may purchase a portable AC unit (up to 8,000 BTU), which on-site maintenance will install for you.

  3. Policies & Conduct: Upon arrival, you will receive a Resident Handbook outlining all residence hall policies and procedures. All guests must abide by the rules of the residence halls and Downstate Health Sciences University. Failure to comply with these policies may result in immediate removal from the residence hall.
