Downstate Department of Surgery Achieves Meritorious Outcomes for Surgical Patient Care
Oct 30, 2024
Congratulations to SUNY Downstate’s Department of Surgery led by chairman Dr. Panos
Kougias for being recognized by ACS NSQIP as achieving meritorious outcomes for surgical
patient care in all cases. The NSQIP collects data on inpatient and outpatient surgical
procedures with the goal of improving the safety and quality of care. Of 609 participating
hospitals, Downstate was one of 77 recognized. For meritorious status, the hospital
must achieve high outcome scores in the categories of cardiac arrest and myocardial
infarction, pneumonia, unplanned intubation, ventilator > 48 hours, renal failure,
surgical site infection, and urinary tract infection. The recognition is a momentous
testament to the quality of surgical care and commitment to continual improvement
at SUNY Downstate. We recognize with gratitude the exceptional work of Debbie Inniss,
MSc, BSN, RN, Assistant Director of Nursing and NSQIP Data Coordinator and Justin
C. Choi, MD for his leadership of the program. For more information, please click here.
