The Department of Surgery is excited to announce that one of the chief residents, Dr. Edwin A. Jimenez, matched into the Advanced Gastrointestinal Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at Jackson South Medical Center in Miami, Florida. The advanced surgical fellowship includes a broad-based case mix in order to acquire and master the technical skills required to perform a diverse range of advanced minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Jimenez will specialize in both flexible endoscopies and robotics, as well as engage in a variety of procedures such as hernias, solid organ, colectomies, bariatric, anti-reflux, and biliary procedures. Dr. Jimenez has been interested in minimally invasive surgery since his intern year and is overjoyed to have this opportunity.
Dr. Jimenez was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and immigrated to the United States as an adolescent. Dr. Jimenez received his Bachelor of Science degree in Toxicology with a minor in Chemistry from St. John’s University in Queens, New York. Upon graduating, Dr. Jimenez attended the University of South Florida for his Master of Science in Medical Sciences. He returned to New York for medical school at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, where he fostered his passion for surgery. Dr. Jimenez was honored to remain at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University for his general surgery residency, where he co-published research on antibiotic resistance in colorectal surgery cases. Prior to his medical education, Dr. Jimenez volunteered as a Spanish interpreter in Queens, where he gained an appreciation for the continuity of care and the crucial role that each person has in providing care to patients. Dr. Jimenez is passionate in serving traditionally underrepresented populations, such as immigrants and people of color, and takes great responsibility in delivering high quality surgical care to all.
Brooklyn is Dr. Jimenez’s home, and he will miss all he had the pleasure of working with during his residency at SUNY Downstate and affiliate hospitals. Dr. Jimenez is excited to embark on this new journey in Miami to receive training from leaders in the field of minimally invasive surgery but will never forget how SUNY Downstate impacted him.
