The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery was privileged to host Dr. Jay Kaufman, Professor
in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health at McGill
University. Dr. Kaufman holds several esteemed academic positions, including Visiting
Professor in the Division of Epidemiology at the University of Chile, Santiago; Adjunct
Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of
Public Health; and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University
of North Carolina School of Public Health.
An internationally recognized leader in epidemiology, data analytics, and health outcomes
research, Dr. Kaufman’s research spans fields including health disparities, perinatal
health, infectious diseases, and the impact of health policy. Dr. Kaufman has led
numerous research projects in the United States and internationally. He serves as
an editor for the journal Epidemiology and is an active member and past president of the Society for Epidemiological Research.
In his Grand Rounds presentation, "Learning to Sweat the Big Stuff in Epidemiology and Public Health Research," Dr. Kaufman provided valuable insights into the critical role of methodology in
clinical research. He emphasized the importance of accurate methodology for sound
data interpretation and illustrated how methodological errors can lead to misleading
clinical conclusions. Dr. Kaufman highlighted the vital role of collaboration between
clinician researchers and epidemiologists, stressing that synergistic partnerships
will advance future health research. The SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery extends
its sincere gratitude to Dr. Kaufman for sharing his expertise on the role of epidemiology
in evaluating and conducting clinical research.
