Aug 29, 2024

Danylo Orlov, MPHThe SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery welcomes Danylo Orlov, MPH as the Research Program Coordinator for the iNSPIRe Initiative.

Danylo was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and immigrated to the United States in elementary school. Throughout his educational journey, he has always had a special interest in the life sciences, electing biology as his area of focus throughout grade school. In 2021, Danylo graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Biology & Society from Cornell University’s College of Arts and Sciences and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa national academic honor society. After graduation, Danylo volunteered as a research assistant for Dr. Leonid Vorobyev. This role, coupled with his firsthand experience of the pandemic's challenges, solidified his passion for public health.

In 2023, Danylo began his journey as an MPH student in biostatistics at the SUNY Downstate School of Public Health. Over the four semesters in the program, he not only excelled in his coursework but also served as a teaching assistant for both the Principles of Biostatistics and Program Design and Evaluation courses. Under the meticulous guidance of his mentor, Dr. Rose Calixte, Danylo published his first research manuscript in the Journal of Community Health, exploring the impact of sexuality on depression prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment among NYC adults. He has also presented findings from his other academic research at scientific forums, such as NYCEF, and is currently working on publishing his thesis paper on the long-term survivorship of adults with functional limitations. In 2024, Danylo completed his MPH degree with a perfect 4.0 GPA and received the prestigious William Kuchler Award for Excellence in Biostatistics. He was also inducted into the Delta Omega honorary society for public health.

While completing his MPH, Danylo had the opportunity to collaborate with biostatisticians, epidemiologists, clinicians, and public health professionals in roles both within and outside of Downstate. In 2023, he began working under Dr. Tonya Taylor and Dr. Crystal Marquez as a researcher for the Social Determinants of Health Cohort Study, where he assisted the team with conducting survey interviews and managing recorded data for further analysis. In 2024, he completed the HRTP internship program at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, working with Dr. Howard Alper to advance research using data from the World Trade Center Health Registry, the largest post-disaster prospective cohort in the United States. Currently, Danylo continues to collaborate with his colleagues at the DOHMH to finalize the submission of his research manuscript to the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports.

Danylo’s expertise lies in his strong understanding of epidemiological methodology and biostatistical analysis. Throughout his academic and professional experiences, he has become proficient in a wide range of statistical techniques, including hypothesis testing, regression model building, survival analysis, effect modification, mediation, imputation, and time series analysis. He has applied these methods using various statistical software tools, including SAS, R, and Stata. As a Research Program Coordinator for the iNSPIRe Initiative, Danylo aims to leverage his expertise to support clinical and health services research focused on improving patient outcomes and reducing inequities in medical treatment and resource allocation. Additionally, he is dedicated to advancing the research education of medical students and residents.
