The Orthopaedic Surgery residency program offers an elective for medical students interested in the area of musculoskeletal care. Students will gain experience in examination, diagnosis and initial management of patients in a clinical setting. Additionally, students will also actively be involved in surgical cases and inpatient management of post-operative patients. During the 4 week rotation students will rotate with surgeons in the following areas of orthopaedic surgery:

  • Adult Joint Reconstruction
  • Hand/Upper Extremity
  • Shoulder/Elbow
  • Sports Medicine
  • Foot & Ankle
  • Spine
  • Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Fracture Service

 

Objectives:

  • Expose students to the diagnosis and management of a broad range of musculoskeletal system disorders.
  • Obtain introductory knowledge in orthopedic exam and diagnosis, sports, musculoskeletal radiology, pediatric orthopedics, joint reconstruction, physical rehabilitation, and sports event medical coverage
  • Become familiar with common procedures used in orthopaedic surgery and related specialties (ie. Hand surgery, Shoulder/Joint extremity etc)
  • Become familiar with common problems encountered in orthopaedic surgery and related specialties, their presentation, diagnosis and management

Length of rotation/elective: 4 weeks
Maximum Number of Students: 8 (4 per rotation and 4 per elective)

4618 ORTH: AMBULATORY CARE IN ORTHOPAEDICS

The Orthopaedic Surgery residency program offers an elective for medical students interested in the care of athletes. This 2 week elective will expose students to the fields of orthopaedic surgery and primary care medicine. Students will gain experience in orthopaedic surgery clinic, family medicine clinic, orthopaedic surgery, as well as current lecture series in related fields.

Objectives:

  • Obtain introductory knowledge in orthopedic exam and diagnosis, sports, sports ethics, musculoskeletal radiology, endurance medicine, pediatric orthopedics, physical rehabilitation, and sports event medical coverage;
  • Become familiar with common procedures used in Sports medicine (i.e. injection techniques, fracture care, splinting/casting);
  • Become familiar with common problems encountered in Sports Medicine, their presentation, diagnosis and management.

Length of elective: 2 weeks or 4 weeks
